Acoustic

Music made with unamplified instruments, though its stories rarely stop at the question of volume.

Acoustic describes an instrumental and recording approach rather than a genre. In IDIOTEQ it might indicate a singer-songwriter piece, a stripped-down version of a punk song or an entirely instrumental performance. Acoustic instruments have served innumerable musical cultures; guitar and piano recordings are only a small part of that history. Electric bands also use acoustic sessions to reconsider arrangements they originally built around distortion.

What changes when amplification leaves

An acoustic guitar reveals finger noise, string movement and the small differences in how a note is struck. A voice can occupy more space without competing against a wall of guitars. But a recording still depends on microphones, a room and the choices made in mixing it. Acoustic does not necessarily mean soft, traditional or even live: the performance can be extremely forceful, layered or meticulously produced.

A useful filter, not a branch of rock

Acoustic Rock, Indie Folk and Folk Punk describe more specific musical settings, but Acoustic should not become their strict parent. A hardcore band making a one-off acoustic recording has not changed its entire musical lineage. The tag is most valuable when it points to the actual arrangement captured on the release.
