Desert Rock

Desert Rock is rooted in the music communities around Palm Desert and the wider Coachella Valley in Southern California. Local musicians created places to play when formal venues were scarce, including outdoor shows powered by generators. Kyuss became the most influential early group associated with that circuit, while its members and collaborators went on to other bands with different approaches. That local history matters; the label shouldn't automatically describe every heavy band recorded in a desert.

Thick fuzz guitars, deep grooves and psychedelic repetition are familiar features, often joined by a loose rock pulse. Later records might approach stoner metal or alternative rock, but the original scene included more than one sound. Desert Rock overlaps with Stoner Rock without being a universal alternative name for it.
