Emo Rap

Rap songs carrying guitar loops, exposed singing and the DIY intimacy of internet music communities.

Emo rap emerged within online Hip-Hop networks during the 2010s, drawing on earlier alternative rap, cloud rap and the emotional directness of Emo and pop-punk. It did not simply begin with one crossover hit. Bones, Black Kray and artists associated with GothBoiClique developed approaches that placed vulnerable singing, distorted guitar samples and highly personal lyrics into rap production. Lil Peep and Lil Tracy brought a particular version of that crossover to new audiences, while later musicians carried the language toward melodic trap and pop.

Guitars inside a beat

A track may be built on a sampled emo guitar phrase, sparse programmed drums and a voice that moves between rapping and singing. Heavy distortion or a clear pop chorus can appear, but neither is mandatory. The emotional material matters in the song without becoming the only classification rule. Many forms of hip-hop have always addressed grief and vulnerability; emo rap identifies a specific musical and scene intersection.

The direction of influence

Emo Rap belongs to a hip-hop history, with influences from Emo, Pop-Punk, Alternative Rock and other guitar music. It should not be classified as a strict descendant of Emo just because the names share a word.
