Experimental Hip-Hop
Hip-hop where the construction of the beat, voice or song becomes the main experiment.
Experimental Hip-Hop developed along multiple paths from Hip-Hop's early use of turntables and recording technology. Different generations pushed sampling, rhythmic placement and lyrical structure beyond the expectations of their moment. The Bomb Squad's dense production, the loose, unconventional records of the underground and later artists including Dälek and clipping. show very different approaches. A track may center on noise, an unusual vocal arrangement or beats that barely settle into repetition. The term is not a synonym for Alternative Hip-Hop or Experimental Rap, though their histories overlap. It also does not belong to experimental rock simply because an artist uses unusual sounds.
