Gothic Metal
Gothic metal became recognizable during the early 1990s, with Paradise Lost's Gothic providing a crucial early reference. Type O Negative followed a different New York path, while Theatre of Tragedy brought alternating harsh and clean singing to slow, dramatic heavy music. Their results are not identical, and the genre soon became broader than its initial death-doom connections.
Slow riffs, keyboards and dramatic melodic passages can be important, but no one vocal style defines every recording. Some bands retain extreme-metal techniques; others approach gothic rock or symphonic Metal. Lyrics and stage imagery cannot classify a record independently of its music.
