Melodic Death Metal

Death-metal heaviness made memorable through interlocking lead guitars and sharply organized melodies.

Melodic death metal took recognizable form during the early-to-mid-1990s, especially around the Swedish city of Gothenburg. At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity and In Flames made harsh vocals and extreme-metal riffing work alongside harmonized guitar leads. Stockholm's Swedish death-metal scene pursued different textures, so the Gothenburg association should not be used as another name for all Swedish Death Metal. Earlier heavy-metal melody was part of the vocabulary, but these groups developed their own compositional approach.

Melody inside the attack

Tightly picked riffs and forceful drums remain central, while the guitar lines often carry recognizable melodic themes. Some records emphasize complex arrangements; others use condensed, direct song structures. The voice can remain harsh even when the instrumental writing becomes more accessible. That contrast helped make the style influential on later melodic metalcore.

The right connections

The musical foundation is Death Metal, with identifiable influence from melodic heavy-metal guitar writing. Metalcore musicians later drew heavily on the Gothenburg approach; this later borrowing should not be mistaken for a shared 1990s origin.
