Neo-Folk

Acoustic instruments moving through the post-industrial underground, carrying very different ideas about history and identity.

Neofolk developed through parts of the European post-industrial scene in the 1980s and 1990s, drawing from Folk instruments, experimental music and sometimes overtly political or ritual imagery. Current 93, Sol Invictus and Death in June are frequently discussed in this context, but their musical choices and ideological histories cannot be collapsed into one position. Some artists later approached a quieter acoustic style; others remained closer to electronic and experimental music. The term is narrower and historically more specific than Dark Folk, which can describe a wide range of somber acoustic music without the same post-industrial background. Its cultural controversies need to be addressed with evidence rather than ignored or generalized.
