Orchestral Punk

Punk's direct energy delivered by bands that use more than guitar, bass and drums.

Orchestral Punk describes records where strings, horns or a large ensemble change the sound and scale of punk-derived writing. Brooklyn's World/Inferno Friendship Society developed a theatrical collective approach involving horns, piano and numerous rotating musicians, borrowing from cabaret, soul and punk. Other artists have written punk songs arranged for chamber instruments or used orchestral passages within post-hardcore. The name does not define a continuous historical genre by itself. An orchestra can expand the dynamic range of a song, but adding violins to one recording does not change a band's entire musical identity.
