Progressive Death Metal

Progressive Death Metal emerged from late-1980s and early-1990s death-metal musicians who were changing the structure and harmonic language of extreme music. Atheist and Death pushed toward jazz-related rhythmic complexity, while Cynic's Focus developed a more elaborate fusion. Opeth later used long melodic arcs and contrasting acoustic passages in another distinct approach. These examples do not share one stylistic formula or geographic starting point.

Unusual rhythms are part of the picture, but recurring themes, changes in texture and the relationships between heavy and quiet sections are equally important. The style overlaps strongly with Technical Death Metal. One emphasizes broader structural changes and the other often emphasizes precise instrumental technique, without a universal line between them.
