Progressive Punk

Punk structures opened toward longer writing, irregular rhythms and less familiar instrumental choices.

Progressive Punk is used inconsistently for music that keeps punk's attack while making its compositions more complex. The Minutemen brought unusual rhythms and terse arrangements into early-1980s American punk; later groups including Refused developed more extended and eclectic approaches. These recordings have clearer historical homes in post-punk, post-hardcore and experimental punk. An actual progressive-punk movement with one founding scene is not well established. The label can help describe a particular recording, but it should not be the automatic parent of post-hardcore or mathcore merely because those styles use unusual time signatures.
