Skacore
Skacore describes bands pushing ska-punk toward a harder and faster Hardcore attack while retaining the offbeat rhythm inherited from Jamaican Ska. The American underground of the late 1980s and 1990s supplied major examples. Voodoo Glow Skulls formed in Riverside, California in 1988 and built their sound through local shows, punk rhythm, ska guitar and horns. Their own biography documents the 1993 debut and their move to Epitaph in 1995.
A skacore song can snap from clipped, bouncing offbeat chords into heavily distorted punk passages. Vocals may be shouted, but the combination is rhythmic, not simply a punk band adding a horn section. The Jamaican origin of ska remains part of the history.
