Spoken Word

The human voice at the center, where timing, language and silence carry the performance without needing a melody.

Spoken word is a broad performance description, not a modern musical genre with one founding city. Recorded poetry, radio drama, oral storytelling and political speech all have separate histories. In the context of underground music, the term can point toward poems performed with musicians, spoken narration inside a record or a text delivered rhythmically without conventional singing. The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron became especially influential around 1970 by joining political poetry with percussion and the music of Black American communities.

The beat of the words

A spoken performance can work without instruments, or be organized against drums, bass and electronic sound. The shape of a phrase, the space before a word and changes of emphasis can carry an entire piece. Some spoken-word albums lean toward jazz or hip-hop; others belong to experimental performance and sound art.

Not all speech is one genre

Spoken Word is a discovery descriptor rather than the strict parent of Rap or Hip-Hop. Later rap developed its own histories and performance conventions, even as the work of earlier poets influenced musicians. The original context of the text must remain visible.
