Surf Punk
Punk's attack meeting the rapid picking and reverb of early California surf music.
Surf punk is a flexible description for bands combining the rhythmic drive of punk with instrumental surf-rock guitar techniques. Agent Orange helped establish a distinctive Southern California version in the early 1980s, writing short punk songs shaped by reverb-heavy melodies and an awareness of older instrumental music. The style later appeared through other regional punk scenes and revival bands, sometimes leaning toward horror punk or garage rock. Surf Rock itself was already established two decades earlier, so the ancestry runs from that earlier guitar tradition into punk rather than the reverse.
A clear guitar signature
Rapid picked lines, short repeated phrases and a bright, reverberant tone can sit over fast punk drumming. Other songs keep a simpler chord attack and insert a surf instrumental section. The sound need not involve surf-themed lyrics; the musical borrowing is more informative than beach imagery.
Not every fast surf tune is punk
Instrumental surf rock can be aggressive without belonging to a punk scene. Surf Punk means the meeting of the two practices, which can be audible in the rhythm, performance or song structure.
