Acoustic Rock

Rock songs rearranged around wooden instruments, where a riff can still hit without distortion.

Acoustic Rock is a practical label for music that keeps Rock songwriting while making Acoustic guitar, piano or similar instruments central. Its history crosses several eras. Unplugged performances in the 1990s made one form highly visible when electric rock bands reworked their catalogues for a different stage. Yet acoustic rock was not invented by television: guitar-centered rock and folk-rock records had moved between acoustic and electric arrangements for decades.

A new shape for the same song

Removing heavy electric guitars can change how the listener hears the drumbeat and voice. Fingerpicked passages may replace sustained riffs, and a chorus may depend on several voices rather than amplification. Some acoustic rock is quiet, but the category does not require a gentle tempo or a sentimental lyric. Its defining feature is the musical arrangement, not a claim that the band has abandoned rock.

A filter more than a lineage

Acoustic Rock may overlap with Folk Rock, Indie Folk and singer-songwriter music. It is a more specific descendant of the broad Acoustic descriptor in a practical browsing sense, though that does not make Acoustic itself a strict genre parent.
