Dark Ambient
Ambient composition taking its time with unease, low frequencies and sounds that refuse to explain where they came from.
Dark ambient developed from industrial, electronic and experimental music through the late 1980s and early 1990s. Lustmord helped make the approach recognizable, using long low-frequency passages and recordings associated with underground spaces on Heresy in 1990. Other artists, including Raison d'être, worked through different combinations of processed sound, voices and sustained electronic tones. The style expanded internationally through independent labels dedicated to long-duration experimental work.
Slow does not mean gentle
A dark-ambient piece may contain a sustained low sound, a distant metallic impact or a faint recording that changes the entire sense of space. Conventional drum patterns and melodies are often absent. The listener's attention moves toward gradual shifts in pitch, density and silence. Some recordings are minimal; others are richly layered and forceful.
Its close relations
Dark Ambient draws from Ambient, Industrial and Drone techniques, but unease alone does not define a genre. A metal band using an eerie keyboard interlude has not necessarily made a dark-ambient album. Likewise, dungeon synth has a different, more specific cultural history.
