Hyperpop

Hyperpop is a name that became widespread after many of its musical techniques already existed. A. G. Cook's PC Music collective and SOPHIE were central to an early-2010s approach built around exaggerated digital Pop surfaces and deliberately synthetic sound. In 2019 the word gained further recognition through a streaming playlist, which brought together artists who did not necessarily consider themselves part of one scene. 100 gecs became an especially visible point of reference, while the music kept changing.

Pitch-shifted voices, brittle Electronic percussion, compressed bass and abrupt changes in texture are common, but none is mandatory. A catchy melody often sits inside sounds that push against pop's expected finish. The genre's early connections to online and queer creative networks are important without making all contributors interchangeable.
