Electronic

A musical family defined first by how sounds are produced and transformed, not by one rhythm.

Electronic music has many histories, from early studio experiments and synthesizer composition to dance floors, home-recording cultures and digital production. Kraftwerk made machine-centered pop arrangements influential in the 1970s. Yellow Magic Orchestra developed another approach at the meeting point of pop, synthesizers and technological curiosity. Later artists created new forms around sampling, sequencing and computer-based sound. There is no honest single birthplace for everything now called electronic music.

The instrument becomes a process

Oscillators, drum machines, tape loops, samplers and software can all shape the material. A track may be tightly rhythmic or almost still. Some electronic music follows recognizable songs; other pieces develop through slow changes in sound itself. This enormous range makes the term useful as a high-level navigation category but weak as a precise musical identity.

Connections across the archive

Ambient, Industrial, Trip-Hop and many other genres use electronic methods in different ways. Synthesizers also appear in rock, punk and metal without changing an entire band's genre.
