Nu Jazz
Jazz harmonies and live playing meeting the samples, beats and production of electronic club culture.
Nu Jazz became a recognizable label during the late 1990s and early 2000s, with artists in continental Europe and beyond blending live Jazz instruments, house, hip-hop and Electronic production. St Germain, Jazzanova and the Cinematic Orchestra pursued different approaches, from dance-floor repetition to more developed ensemble pieces. Some records build on sampled jazz, while others use live drumming, piano and horns inside electronic arrangements. It is not simply old jazz with a louder beat. Its history also intersects with Acid Jazz, but the latter has a more specific late-1980s British label and club setting.
