Progressive Doom
Progressive Doom describes music that retains slow, weighty Doom riffing while developing larger structures and more intricate relationships between instrumental sections. While Heaven Wept offer a particularly clear example: their later records grew from epic doom toward longer passages and progressive-metal ideas. The name does not identify a single shared birthplace, and other groups have arrived at related approaches through different scenes.
The music may move between sustained guitar chords, melodic interludes and returning themes, sometimes over an entire album side. Technique is only one part of the identity. A straightforward riff can become progressive through changes in pacing and context. This brings Progressive Doom close to Epic Doom and parts of Progressive Metal, without making them interchangeable.
