Doom

Doom in Explore is an editorial grouping, distinct from Doom Metal as a musical genre. Black Sabbath's early heavy records helped establish a vocabulary of slow, sustained guitar riffs, but later bands developed quite different approaches. Traditional doom stayed close to deliberate, riff-centered heavy metal; Doom Rock often retained a more direct rock structure; Progressive Doom and Doomgaze brought other compositional and guitar treatments. These paths can be browsed together without claiming that one is a direct descendant of another.

A slow tempo alone says little about which branch a record belongs to. The weight may come from prolonged chords, a simple repeating riff or the gap between heavy and quiet passages. Articles listed under Doom are credited to their actual member genres; they do not all carry a Doom tag.
